He was born Robert Milo Leicester Devereux, 4 November, 1932, the only
son of the Hon. Robert Godfey de Bohun Devereux (1894-1934), by his
wife Audrey Maureen Leslie, daughter of James Meakin and the Countess
Sondes; and was a grandson of the 17th Viscount Hereford (1865-1952).
His ancestor, Walter Devereux, KG, in 1500 succeeded his father as
10th Baron Ferrers of Chartley (peerage of England, 1299); was created
Viscount Hereford in the peerage of England, 1550, distinguished
himself in the French Wars of King Henry VIII, &c.
Robert's father died in 1934, and many years later his widowed mother
married, as her second husband (and his second wife) the 7th Earl of
Lisburne.
He was educated at Eton, and succeeded to the peerage and baronetcy on
the demise of his grandfather, 16 April, 1952.
Career: served with the Royal Horse Guards (The Blues) 1960-63; Member
of the Royal Philarmonic Society; Member of the Royal Philarmonic
Orchestra Association.
Lord Hereford was a member of the Order of St John.
He married in 1969, Susan Mary (b. 10 Jan 1941), the only child of
Major Maurice Godley, Royal Fusiliers, of Ide Hill, Sevenoaks, Kent,
(kinsman of the Barons Kilbracken) and Mrs Glen Godley, of Ascott,
Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire, by whom he had two sons. The marriage
ended in divorce in 1982.
The peer's children are:-
(i) The Hon. Charles Robin De Bohun Devereux, b. 11 Aug 1975 (who now
succeeds to the titles)
(ii) The Hon. Edward Mark de Breteuil Devereux, b. 1977.
The family name is pronounced _Deverooks_.

Was he the father of Walter, 1st earl of Essex, and was the earl a younger
son that the titles got separated?
