Julia Neff Barnhart Artist
Julia N. Barnhart, 95, a Bethesda artist for more than 50 years, died of
stomach cancer Feb. 13 [2010] at Carriage Hill House in Bethesda.
Mrs. Barnhart won a number of local awards over the years for her
watercolors. A former art director for Warner Bros. Studio in Hollywood and
artist at the Disney Studios, she won first place in a national poster
contest.
Born in Jackson, Miss., Julia Neff moved as a child to Washington, where she
graduated from Central High School. She received a bachelor's degree from
George Washington University and master's degree in architecture from the
University of Southern California in 1938. After working in Hollywood, she
returned to the Washington area in the early 1940s and married. During World
War II, she worked in the Office of Strategic Services in Washington.
She was a longtime member and former president of the Bethesda Branch of the
National League of American Pen Women. She was also a member of the
Montgomery County Art Association, the Western Art Society, the Maryland
Federation of Women's Clubs, the Westmoreland Hills Garden Club and
Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church.
Her husband, Nelson G. Barnhart, died in 2001.
Survivors include two children, Gregory Barnhart of San Diego and Pamela
McCarthy of Philadelphia.
