Michigan State Police and Grosse Pointe detectives continue to
investigate what police say is the first murder in the city in 32
years.
The body of Barbara Iske, 57, of Sterling Heights, was found Tuesday
afternoon face down in the driveway of a home at Jefferson Avenue and
Dodge Place. Police said she was shot twice.
Iske worked as an accountant for the homeowner and visited the home
frequently, Local 4 reported.
"This lady was known for her punctuality. She arrived at the home on
Tuesdays between 10 and 10:30 every morning," said Grosse Pointe
Police Chief Al Fincham.
Police said they received a call at 3:26 p.m. about a white female
"down and not breathing," according to a press release. The victim was
obscured from street view by a hedge and was reported to police by a
newspaper delivery person. Police believe the victim had been laying
in the driveway for some time before being discovered.
Neighbors reported hearing a noise that sounded like fireworks around
10 a.m., according to Fincham. Residents of the home and a caregiver
said they did not hear or see anything unusual.
Iske's purse -- with money inside of it -- and her jewelry were left
untouched at the scene, the station reported.
"The victim was found with her personal belongings - so robbery at
this point doesn't appear to be a motive," said Fincham.
The results of an autopsy revealed that the woman was not sexually
assaulted and there were no signs of a struggle, the station reported.
"What a senseless waste. She would have never hurt anybody," said
Karen Hibner, Iske's niece. "I don’t know why anybody would take her
life. They don't know how they devastated our family."
Witnesses reported that the getaway car may have been an older-model
green Ford Tempo -- with plastic covering a rear window -- that was
seen leaving the area.
