Gerard Francis Young was born 5 May, 1910, the son of Smelter J.
Young, MICE, and of Edith his wife, daughter of Sir John Aspinall,
President of ICI.
He was educated at Ampleforth.
Career: Engineering Apprentice with LNER, Doncaster; later with the
family firm, The Tempered Spring Co (later Tempered Group Ltd), 1930,
director 1936, Managing Director, 1942, Chairman 1954-78; Chairman,
Sheffield Area Board of Sun Alliance & London Insurance Group;
Director National Vulcan Engineering Insurance Group, 1962-79; Member,
National Board for Prices and Incomes, 1968-71;Member, Top Salaries
Review Body, 1971-74; Member, Armed Forces Pay Review Body, 1971-74;
General Commissioner for Income Tax, 1947-74; Director, Crucible
Theatre Trust, 1967-75; Secretary, Association of Christian
Communities in Sheffield, 1940-46; Chairman, Radio Hallam Ltd,
1973-79; Trustee, Sheffield Town Trust; Master, Company of Cutlers in
Hallamshire, 1961-2; JP for Sheffield 1950-85; (Last) High Sheriff of
Hallamshire, 1973-4; DL West Riding of Yorkshire 1974; KStJ 1976; GCSG

In 1974 he was appointed Lord Lieutenant (the first) of the new county
of South Yorkshire. He received the CBE in 1967.
Gerard Young married in 1937, Diana Graham Murray, MA, BSc, JP,
daughter of Charles Graham Murray, MD, by whom he had two sons (inc
Hugo Young the Guardian journalist who died last year) and three
daughters.
A Requiem Mass takes place at St Francis' Church, Sandygate Rd,
Sheffield, Friday 16 January, 2004.
