Murray Altmann Federal Reserve Board Official
Murray Altmann, 85, an economist who retired in 1983 from the Federal
Reserve System as an assistant to the Board of Governors, died Oct. 24
[2009] at Sibley Memorial Hospital. He had complications following abdominal
surgery.
Mr. Altmann began his Federal Reserve career in 1949 in the research and
statistics division. Over the years, he did economic advisory work for the
United Nations and the Central Bank of Tanzania.
Mr. Altmann, a Rockville resident, was a New York native and an Army veteran
of World War II. He graduated in 1947 from Pennsylvania State University,
where he received a master's degree in economics in 1949.
In the early 1990s, he did volunteer work at Rockville schools and the
public library.
His marriage to Paula Bischoff Altmann ended in divorce.
Survivors include two sons, Micah Altmann of Catonsville, Md., and Eben
Altmann of Rockville; a sister, Ruth Altmann of Kensington; and a
granddaughter.
