Robert B. Thomson Jr., son of former major leaguer Bobby Thomsom, has died
at age 38.
He died June 17th at Somerset Medical Center.
His father, Bobby Thomson, hit one of the most famous HRs in baseball
history. His three-run shot in the last of the ninth inning of a playoff
game in 1951 gave the New York Giants the National League pennant and a 5-4
win over the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Robert B. Thomson Jr. was a sales executive and partner with Garden State
Pump Co. in Edison, New Jersey.
He was predeceased by his mother, Elaine Coley Thomson, and also is survived
by his widow Judy, a daughter, Reagan, and two sisters.
The death forced the elder Thomson to cancel an appearance scheduled June
27-28 at the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
This is tragic news. This year should have been one of celebration for
Thomson, with the 50th anniversary of his most famous achievement in
baseball. Indeed, I believe just yesterday he was named an honorary
captain of the National League All-Star team. My prayers are with him.

Yeah, this is sad news. His son's obit. appeared just below the article
about Bobby Thomson being named an honorary NL co-captain at this years
All-Star game. Kirby Puckett will be the AL honorary captain, and Ralph
Branca (the pitcher Thomson hit his famous HR off of) will be the other NL
co-captain.
I always liked Bobby Thomson and I love Russ Hodges' call . . . "The Giants
win the pennant. The Giants win the pennant. The Giants win the pennant . . .
They're killing Bobby Thomson. They're killing Bobby Thomson. His own
teammates are killing him."
