Benny Perrin, who played defensive back for Bear Bryant at Alabama before a career in the NFL, died Friday.
Morgan County Coroner Jeff Chunn told AL.com that Perrin, 57, committed suicide. He died Friday afternoon after being transported from his Decatur home to Decatur General Hospital, Chunn said.
Chunn said he could not release more information because the investigation is still ongoing.
Perrin owned a sports bar and restaurant as well as a barbeque restaurant in Decatur.
Perrin lettered for two seasons at Alabama in 1980-81 before playing four seasons from 1982-85 for the St. Louis Cardinals in the NFL.
The Decatur Daily reported in 2013 that Perrin was one of about 4,500 former players who had joined a lawsuit against the NFL concerning concussions.
