HEADLINE: Philanthropist's oldest son dies in Sonoma County

DATELINE: SANTA ROSA, Calif.

Michael Behring, eldest son of philanthropist Ken Behring, has died of an
apparent drug overdose. He was 52.

Behring died at a Santa Rosa hospital Tuesday after being pulled over by a
Sonoma County sheriff's deputy for driving erratically on Highway 101.

The officer arrested Behring, who was wanted in Contra Costa County on a
warrant for driving on a suspended license. A jail nurse noticed signs of
drug use. Behring said he had swallowed a bag of methamphetamine when he was
stopped, said Santa Rosa police Detective Brian Davis, who is investigating.

An autopsy found a small baggy in Behring's stomach, Davis said.

Behring, who had been estranged from his family in the past, was recently in
contact with them and seemed in good spirits.

"It has stunned the whole family because of how good he seemed," his
brother, David, told the Contra Costa Times.

Behring was separated from his wife and saw little of his four children
until lately, family members said.

He lived in modest homes in Martinez and Concord, far from the gated manses
that his father built east of Danville, and which vaulted Ken Behring to the
ranks of Forbes magazine's 400 richest Americans. Ken Behring founded the
Blackhawk Museum in Danville, which showcases classic automobiles.

Michael Behring bought and sold flea market and estate sale items, and would
bid at auction on the contents of abandoned storage units.

Court records show his driver's license was revoked following a 1989 drunken
driving arrest. Over the past decade, he was repeatedly found guilty of
driving on a suspended license, and sentenced to probation, short jail terms
and work programs.

Strange construction, so to speak. Are we to take it that Ken
Behring's vault into the ranks of the Forbes' rich list was due to the
gated manses he built rather than the fortune he'd amassed? b

Was the fortune amassed through the profitable construction
and sale of gated manses?
