Wally Kuralt, owner of the Intimate Bookstore in Chapel Hill, NC died
Saturday, December 13. He was 64 and had been battling Merkel cell
carcinoma for two years. He was the brother of the late CBS newsman
Charles Kuralt.

The Intimate Bookstore was an independent book store on Franklin Street
in Chapel Hill. The Intimate Bookshop was founded in 1931, and became a
landmark of Franklin Street. Wally Kuralt, who graduated from UNC in
1960, purchased the Intimate in 1964. It burned in 1992 and was rebuilt
the next year. It was closed for good in 1998.

Wally Kuralt opened several other Intimate Bookshops around North
Carolina, but was forced to close his last book store in 1999.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda, three sons, one daughter, and a sister.

He was quite an icon in the Raleigh/Chapel Hill area. I was surprised to see
that the original Intimate Bookstore had closed down, btw ... presumably they
couldn't compete with the big chains.

Sad. RIP.

One may as well call Barnes & Noble "McBookstore." The closing of
small "intimate" bookstores is a sad chapter in the life of anyone who
loves books, loves browsing, and loves atmosphere. I tip my hat to Mr.
Kuralt, who put up a good fight in the battle for civilization.

Unfortunately, the same is happening in New Zealand. Big chains like
Whitcoulls (owned by W H Smith) and the Warehouse have virtually wiped
out what was once a book lovers heaven. Major centres like Auckland
still have a few excellent specialist bookshops, but the days of the
good generalist bookseller seem to be over. That's not to say that big
stores like Whitcoulls don't sell a lot of books. It's just that their
selection is something akin to a bookshop in an international airport,
only bigger.

Sadly, our one and only bookshop in Whangarei (Chapter One) closed
early this year, and it was an exceptionally good shop with a lot of
local support. Ironically, it is the book wholesalers and the big
publisher-corporates that really undermine the viability of the
independent bookseller.

I agree that Mr Kuralt and people like him should be celebrated for
fighting the barbarians inside the gates. b
