He was born 28 June, 1913, the son of Francis Warre Rathbone, (who
died in 1939), by his wife, the former Edith Bertha Hampshire.
He was educated at Marlborough & the London School of Economics.
Career: he was commissioned into the Royal Armoured Corps in 1941; 2nd
Lieutenant 4/7 DG Middle East, 1942; Staff Captain General
Headquarters, Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, subsequently
Deputy-Assistant-Quartermaster-General (Plans) Staff College Haifa,
1944-45; partner in Rathbone Bros & Co., 1939-79; director of the
Albany Investment Trust; Norton Megaw and Co (and associated
companies); honorary Treasurer of Liverpool University, 1972-81
(president of the Council thereof 1981-84 & 1985-89); Hon LLD
Liverpool University, 1981.
The Rathbone home was at Park Lodge, Sefton Park, Liverpool.
He married firstly, in 1939 (divorced 1945), Joan Duckworth, by whom
he had one daughter, Marilyn. He married secondly, in 1949, Elizabeth
Eleanor, daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Coulson Leah, DSO, RA
(who had died in 1927), by whom he had one son, Andrew, and one
daughter, Jenny.
The funeral service takes place, Tuesday 13 August, 2002, at
Springwood Crematorium, Allerton, Liverpool, at 2.30 p.m.
