SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) - A veteran character actor who appeared in TV
Westerns and such films as "Death of a Gunfighter" was sentenced Wednesday
to 25 years to life in prison for killing a man in a barroom shooting.
Robert Sorrells, 75, had pleaded guilty to murder in May for shooting Art De
Long, 45, and to attempted murder for shooting and wounding Edward Sanchez.
The attacks occurred July 24, 2004, at the Regency Lounge after Sorrells got
into a quarrel with another bar patron. De Long intervened and escorted the
former actor outside.
Sorrells then went home, picked up a gun and came back to the bar. A
surveillance video shown during sentencing showed him re-entering the bar,
walking behind De Long and shooting him in the back. He then shot Sanchez,
who has since recovered.
Sorrells has been in custody at the Ventura County Jail since his arrest
shortly after the shooting. He had acted since the 1950s in films and TV
shows including "Gunsmoke," "Rawhide," "Bonanza," "The Waltons" and "Kung
Fu." His most recent film credits included "Nowhere to Run," "Fletch" and
"Bound For Glory."

Sorrells is probably best remembered as the robot pitcher Casey in a great
Twilight Zone episode.

> Time to ban Westerns since people use those thinking guns that like to
> shoot people. <sarcasm>
That was discussed and almost did happen many years ago. Sort of like
refusing to show a movie because the joke is too dirty.

Ever hear of Google Images??? Scheesh!
If he hadn't gotten his gun training as a Western actor he probably
> would never have tried to kill the guy with one. He'd probably have gone
> home and got a baseball bat to do the job. <lol>
Trained by Arvo Ojala, perhaps?
