Former Megadeth drummer Nick Menza dead at 51 after collapsing on stage in Los Angeles

BY Jason Silverstein

Former Megadeth drummer Nick Menza suffered a sudden death Saturday night after apparently collapsing on stage during a gig in Los Angeles. He was 51.

The thrash metal drummer kept rocking until his last moments, when he passed out while playing with his band OMH at the Baked Potato, a small jazz club.

“Thoughts and prayers going out to drummer Nick Menza. I was watching his band OHM at the Baked Potato tonight and he collapsed on stage,” a fan, Mike Simpson, wrote on Facebook.

“Paramedics were saying it looked like a heart attack. Positive thoughts...”

The cause of death has not been confirmed. But his former bandmates confirmed Menza's death in messages mourning him online.

“We all know the great and unique drummer that Nick Menza was, but he was also a trustworthy friend, a hilarious bandmate, as well as a very loving dad,” former Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman wrote on Facebook.

“I’m beyond sad, did not see this coming at all. RIP Brother.”

Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine said he woke up the bad news at 4 a.m.

“TELL ME THIS ISN'T TRUE!,” he wrote on Twitter, adding: “#nickmenzarip.”

The Baked Potato wrote on its Facebook page, "RIP Nick Menza........."

Managers there could not immediately be reached.

Menza played the drums for Megadeth between 1989 and 1998, replacing Chuck Behler on the kit. He played on four of the band’s most acclaimed albums, including “Rust in Peace” and “Youthanasia.” He briefly rejoined the band in 2004 for rehearsals, but left before a tour. Mustaine told Blabbermouth Menza stayed off the stage because “he just wasn’t prepared.”

Menza recorded a solo album, “Life After Deth,” in 2002 and performed in several bands after leaving Megadeth for good.

This unfortunate demise highlights something that I, as an occasional weekend drummer, think about OFTEN.

That is, how is it that this sort of thing doesn't happen FREQUENTLY, given how, compared to the other members of a band playing instruments that require VASTLY less muscular action, intensely energetic and thus exhausting is drumming by its very nature? And ESPECIALLY so in metal and other up-tempo musical genres.

Frankly, if I somehow improbably found myself the member-behind-the-kit of a speed metal band or some power trio, after the first rehearsal I'd be trying to convince my bandmates to morph into a country-swing group or a pop covers band, merely for fear I'd soon end up like this onetime Megadeath sticks guy. Or at least to give my weary arms* a rest.

Bryan, you might wish to ask Def Leppard's drummer Rick Allen that
question. :) Allen has only one arm and does the job.

Is he their first member to be Megaded?
I can't believe they've lost the putative million.

The World Trade Center towers MUST rise again,
at least as tall as before...or terror has triumphed.
