Richard Steele Guy, an obstetrician-gynecologist in Washington DC for
more than four decades, died June 24, 2006, at Juan F. Luis Hospital in
St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, from complications from a
systemic infection, at the age of 80.
Dr. Guy had a private medical practice in Washington DC and was on the
senior medical staff at the old Columbia Hospital for Women. He moved
to St. Croix from Washington DC after his retirement in 1999.
Among other professional affiliations, he was a former president of the
Washington Gynecological Society and a fellow of the American College
of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
He led or participated in local and national task forces and committees
concerning maternal and child health.
He was a native of Steubenville, Ohio, and a graduate of Ohio State
University.
He graduated from Meharry Medical College in Nashville in the mid-1950s
and briefly served as an OB/GYN officer in the Air Force.
In St. Croix, he consulted in gynecology for the Virgin Islands family
planning department. He also sailed and scuba dived.
His marriage to Virginia Guy-Ehlen ended in divorce.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Tracy Murphy Guy of St. Croix;
four children from his first marriage, Jenifer Guy of Baltimore, Gina
Guy of New York, New York, Suzanne Mitchell of Atlanta, Georgia, and
Peter S. Guy of Encino, California; a daughter from his second
marriage, Nicole Guy-Lovett of New York, New York; a brother; and 10
grandchildren.
