Festus is dust, Matt is still around, Miss Kitty got
AIDS and died. Doc had a heart attack in 1980 and
Denver Pyle who was a character from time to time is gone.

Anyone else

James Arness (Matt)--Alive
Dennis Weaver (Chester)--Alive
Burt Reynolds (Quint Asper)--Alive
Roger Ewing (Thad)--Alive (I think)
Pat Hingle (filled in while Milburn Stone recovered from heart attack)--Alive

Denver Pyle was never a regular character, but he had auditioned for the
part of Matt Dillon and thought he had it, except they had to do one more
audition...James Arness. At least, that's one story I read.

Of the radio cast, only Parley Baer (who played Chester on radio) is
still alive.

I've always been curious how Amanda Blake got AIDS. Did she live an alternate
lifestyle, or more likely was it due to a blood transfusion she received in the
early 80's? Anybody have any ideas?

I hadn't heard that she did have AIDS -- however, I understand she had a rather
nasty metastatic carcinoma somewhere on or near her face, and had surgeries for
it. So it very well could have been a blood transfusion.

According to what I've read, she caught it from her last husband, who
was a bisexual City Councilman in Texas. She was quite bitter about it.

Amanda Blake married a city councilman from Austin Texas. I believe it was in
the late 70's or early 80s.

That's according to "Total Television".

I don't know m.p. I guess the same logic applies to the fact that when I was in
seventh grade I found out in school how to get a girl pregneant and when I was
in eleventh grade I found out in school how NOT to get a girl pregneant.

And John Wayne introduced the first episode. Actually, there was never
any question that John Wayne would NOT do the show. He was too big a
star to do a TV series in 1955. Arness was a
protegee of Wayne and appeared in several movies with him. Arness wasn't
sure about taking the Gunsmoke gig...he was worried about the effect it
would have on his movie career. John Wayne came over with a bottle of
liquor and convinced him that he had no movie career and Gunsmoke was the
best thing that could happen to him.
There is a fabulous book about Gunsmoke (called..."Gunsmoke: A Complete
History")) by SuzAnne
and Gabor Barabas. This is the complete history (duh) of the radio and TV
shows. It's from McFarland Publishing. If you like Gunsmoke (and I LOVE
it), this is required reading.

She got it from her husband, a much younger bisexual-tending-toward-gay
man. He died before she did, or so I recall.

As I recall, the gent who played the Creature was named Ricou Browning.
Arness is pretty well-known for having played the Thing.

Nope. He was also in "Them," though. Another fine science fiction movie.

Arness was the first soldier on the beach at the Battle of Anzio during
WWII, where he was badly wounded. Because he's so tall, his superior
officers figured they'd test the depth of the water by having him go in
first.

No, Arness did not perform as the creature in Black Lagoon. By that time a yr
or two later, Gunsmoke was already on TV.
