Long story short, the soles on Anne's boots literally fell apart. As
you'll see from the webpage photos, the boots were well taken care of
and show no signs of wear or misuse. Yet the soles have cracked and
the heel of one of the boots has fallen off.
The Kumfs store in our local town refused to take any remedial action,
telling us that Kumfs over two years old are the buyer's problem, not
theirs. In other words, it's your tough luck should a pair of Kumfs
fall apart after two years - regardless of how little they've been
worn or how well they're looked after. One can only assume that Kumfs
boots are NOT made to last. Anne's certainly weren't.
Today I spoke with the Kumfs NZ retail retail manager in Auckland was
been informed that, although the soles are made of a material called
"PU" and that the material is known to disintegrate after a period of
time, the company will take no responsibility for this built-in
obsolescence (my words), because the boots were purchased five years
ago.
SO BE WARNED: Kumfs products with "PU" soles are manufactured and sold
to unsuspecting customers despite the company knowing that the soles'
are made of a material that will disintegrate regardless of how well
the boots are maintained.
And since Kumfs refuses to take responsibility for what I consider to
be faulty product, I feel I have been left with no alternative but to
let as many people as possible know what to expect when they deal with
Kumfs and ask you to please pass on this email and the link to the
webpage.

>My wife's Kumfs boots - BUYER BEWARE!
i'll admit when i read the subject and who posted it that i was really
taken aback. then i re-read it and read the post. it is official my
mind does mostly reside in the gutter.
So which was it, 2 or 5 years?
Why would someone spend $175 on a pair of boots with a sole that is
welded on? Good shoes have soles that are sewn on. When the sole wears
out a new one can be sewn on.
It is a shame that good leather is married with cheap workmanship. I
would never buy that type of shoe again, and I would avoid that brand.
I've had several shoes and slippers that have failed in the same
manner. The difference is that I seldom ever pay more than $20 for
shoes of that quality.
Such is the price we all pay when everyone wants many pairs of shoes
to match different clothes and we want the variety to cost what one or
two pairs of really good shoes cost. I had a pair of Red Wing boots
that lasted nearly twenty years. Thirty years ago they cost around
$150, I resoled them several times but hardly ever gave them care.
So you learned a $175 lesson. If you want shoes to last buy good
shoes. If you want fashion then buy cheap shoes because next year
they'll be out of style.

So much for your reading comprehensiion.
Both. The boots were 5½ old and I was told that Kumfs doesn't cover
anything over two years old.

Nonsense. There are perfectly good shoes that are made with man-made
materials that are attached directly to the leather uppers. For
example, I have a pair of Ecco shoes that I have given some pretty
hard wear over the past twenty-five years. They have man-made soles
that show some wear on the heels, but are perfectly serviceable and
still look great.

More nonsense. The workmanship isn't the problem on my wife's Kumfs
boots. The problem is the material used to make the sole and the
company's refusal to take responsibility for selling a product with
built-in obsolescence. I have two other pairs of Ecco shoes that are
15 and five years old. Both have made-made soles and both are in
perfect condition.
I also have several pairs of Topsiders boat shoes with canvas tops and
rubber soles. I don't expect them to last for years, which is why I
buy more than one pair at a time. My leather Topsiders also have
non-leather soles, have been worn often in demanding conditions and
are in excellent condition after more than three years of use.
