HAROLD BENNETT
Harold Bennett, who has died aged 82, was the television actor who
played young Mr Grace in the television series "Are You Being Served?"
He had left the stage during the depression of the 1930s but
re-entered show business when at 65 he retired from a career as a
desogner-draughtsman with a lighting company.
He began working as an extra in films and was discovered by the
television producer David Croft in a production of "The Rose and the
Ring". After that he was rarely out of work.
He was born in Hastings and became an apprentice jeweller before going
into the theatre where he worked with Noel Coward, Donald Wolfit and
Henry Ainley. In television he appeared with Jimmy Edwards in "Whacko"
and was Mr Blewitt in "Dad's Army". He first appeared as the boss of
Grace Brothers in 1973.
In recent years he appeared in the television production of
"Clayhanger", a Royal Shakespeare Company production of "London
Assurance", Zeffirelli's "Jesus of Nazareth" and an Open University
production of Chekhov's "The Three Sisters."
END.
You've all done very well!
Many think "AYBS" is second rate, but I liked it just fine.
