While listening to the 'Cowboy' Jack Clement Show on Sirius radio
today, before playing a Johnny Horton song, he mentioned several
coincidences between the lives and deaths of Horton and Hank Williams,
Sr.

Presented below is content from Wiki and a few links which provide
information regarding these odd coincidences.

Some of you in this group may know of this stuff, but I don't recall
hearing of it before today.

Coincidences

* Johnny Horton reportedly had experienced premonitions several
months before his own death about the possibility of dying in a car
crash caused by a drunk driver. He always said that if he was in a
head-on situation to drive into the ditch. His accident took place on
a bridge so there was no ditch for which to head.
* Both Horton and Hank Williams were married to the same woman at
the time of their death, and played their last shows at the Skyline
Club in Austin, Texas.
* Both Horton and Hank Williams died in Cadillacs.
* Johnny and the Rowley Trio, (Jerry, Evelyn, and Vera), were
returning from a performance when they heard over the radio about the
death of Hank Williams. They were on Highway 79 going through the town
of Milano, Texas — the same town where Johnny would lose his life
seven years later.

But Horton's premonitions of death grew stronger the more popular he
became with country and pop audiences. He cancelled an appearance at
the premiere of the movie 'North To Alaska' and tried to get out of
his gig at the Skyline Club, but to no avail. He stayed in his
dressing room at the Skyline, convinced a drunk would kill him if he
stayed at the bar.

After the gig he kissed Billie Jean good-bye in the same place and on
the same cheek where Hank had kissed her after his last gig at the
Skyline.

At the town of Milano, east of Austin. Horton’s Cadillac approached a
bridge over a train trestle, a truck coming from the other direction
hit one side of the bridge, then the other side, then it struck
Horton’s car. The driver was found to be drunk and had liquor in the
truck cab: Horton was indeed killed by a drunk. Like Hank Williams, a
gig at the Skyline had been his last, and like Hank Williams, Horton
left behind a grieveing widow named Billie Jean. Horton had married
Billie Jean Jones, the same woman who had been widowed by Hank
Williams.

Sucks to be her.

Also, I really would like to find a recording of the Mormon Tabernacle
Choir's rendition of "The Battle of New Orleans". Although I note that
on the album, the song is referred to as "Traditional", which probably
surprised the song's writer, Jimmie Driftwood.

Had no idea about Horton's widow having already been Williams's as
well !

For what it's worth, Horton died the same Saturday that Mack Sennett
and Ward Bond did.

IIRC, it's the *words* that were written by Jimmie Driftwood. I think
the tune is the traditional fiddle tune, "The Eighth of January,"
which in all probability was written about the Battle of New Orleans.
