Television writer Joe Bonaduce dies at 77

By Holly Andres , Staff Writer

NORTHRIDGE -- A funeral Mass will be said Saturday for television writer Joe
Bonaduce, a longtime resident of the San Fernando Valley, who died Aug. 3. He
was 77.
Bonaduce was a writer and story editor for many 1960s-era situation comedies,
including "The Dick Van Dyke Show," "The Andy Griffith Show," "The Ghost and
Mrs. Muir," "One Day at a Time" and "That Girl." He also wrote for "Bonanza"
and "Burke's Law."

"He met (producer) Carl Reiner, who thought my dad had a wonderful gift for
dialogue and story structure," said son John Bonaduce.

"My dad was clever, incisive, deeply philosophical and very opinionated. Dad
never played a sport with us. Our sport was words. He was a thinker and did all
the hobbies of a thinker."

Another of Bonaduce's three sons is radio personality Danny Bonaduce, who
starred in TV's "The Partridge Family."

Joseph Bonaduce was born to Italian immigrant parents in Jessup, Pa., on Feb.
5, 1927. He graduated from Temple University with a degree in journalism, and
worked as a radio and television reporter in Pennsylvania before coming to
California to produce and direct Dick Clark's "American Bandstand" in 1964.

Survivors include sons John, Anthony and Danny, and a daughter, Cecelia.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Bernardine of
Siena Catholic Church, 24410 Calvert St., Woodland Hills. Burial will be
private.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Metropolitan Opera in New York.

...Joe Bonaduce was also a world-class prick who was criminally abusive
towards both his family (source: Danny Bonaduce) and co-workers (source:
Harlan Ellison). I can only hope that he made attempts to reform his
ways and make amends before his passing; as of the last time I heard
Danny's old WLUP Chicago radio show, about eight years ago, he was far
from either...

Interesting. Where did Ellison and Bonaduce clash? I'd love to hear
that story.

According to the LA Times obit for Bonaduce, he wasn't doing much of
anything during his last few years -- he'd been confined to a nursing
home for some time after a series of incapacitating strokes.
