Whitlock started his broadcast career in the 1950s, becoming general
manager and eventually co-owner of WLBN/WLSK radio, which served
Lebanon and Springfield, as well as a local television station.
He served as executive secretary for the Kentucky Broadcasters
Association, where he was also a past president, and most recently
became executive director emeritus of the organization. The association
gives out a J.T. Whitlock Life Member Award to members retiring or
leaving the profession.
Alvin Wren, who worked under Whitlock for almost 25 years at WLBN/WLSK,
said he remembers boss who was always encouraging him.
"He would listen to us. If he didn't agree, he would at least explain
to you why something wouldn't work," Wren said.
Born in Boyle County, Whitlock served in World War II, and was active
in the American Legion and other veterans organizations.
Survivors include his wife, Colleen Dye Whitlock of Lebanon; his son,
James T. Whitlock, Jr., of Stafford, Va.; his daughter, Betty Whitlock
Reesor of Lexington and his sister, Helen Carey of Lebanon.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday at Bosley Funeral Home in
Lebanon. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Augustine
Catholic Church in Lebanon.
