RICHARD FEGLEY, 64
September 18, 2001
Richard Fegley, 64, a Chicago-based Playboy magazine photographer for 30
years, died Saturday, Sept. 15, in Vencor Hospital in Northlake after a
long illness. After graduating from high school in Pennsylvania, Mr.
Fegley joined the Air Force, where he snapped his first photos of the
American landscape. His mother complimented the images, encouraging her
son to pursue a career in photography.
Mr. Fegley attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, then
moved to Chicago for commercial photography work. In 1971, although he
had never photographed models, he inquired about afreelance job with
Playboy magazine. Impressed with his creative style, Playboy hired him
as a staff member. For the next three decades, he traveled to Asia,
Africa and other locations to photograph women.
"Richard always brought an artistic sensibility to his photographs that
took them far beyond typical glamor photography," said Playboy
photography editor Gary Cole. "Once, when I was editing his shootingof
actress Kim Basinger, I found that several rolls of film were devoted to
the seashells lying on the beach. Kim was nowhere in the photos. But he
saw the beauty of the shells that day and was driven to put what he saw
on film." Survivors include his wife, Merijo ; a son, Joe; two
daughters, Lisa Petti and Tiffany Krubert; a brother, Tom; and four
grandchildren. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at
Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 6150 N. Cicero Ave. Funeral services will
begin at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Damn. I always loved his articles.
As a portrait photographer, I always liked Fegley's simplicity.
Glamour photography can be sooo overdone, but Fegley's work was
almost austere in a way. His style never quite fit with the other
photogs on Playboy's staff - but was always on target to my
sensibilities.
I'll miss ...ahem... studying his work.

Wow, you read it for the articles, too?

Yes, even with the best photographers, after six or seven study
sessions I feel as though I've mastured the topic, and feel the need to
study something else.
And hence, a new magazine every month,

Exactly HOW long was his illness?
(Matt, is your email working?)
