A woman fatally shot the former head of Alaska's state
police, wounded his wife and then turned the gun on
herself Saturday, authorities said.
The armed woman ambushed retired Alaska
Commissioner of Public Safety Glenn Godfrey and his
wife, Patricia, as they arrived at their home in suburban
Eagle River about 12:30 a.m., police said.
The woman hit the 53-year-old retired commissioner first,
striking him twice in the stomach and once in the head,
then shot his 52-year-old wife as she fled up a flight of
stairs, police said.
Patricia Godfrey suffered wounds in the arm, leg and
stomach and was undergoing surgery Saturday morning
at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage.
Police said the assailant, who was not immediately identified,
then fatally shot herself with the 44-caliber Magnum pistol.
Patricia Godfrey managed to call 911 from a bedroom phone.
Arriving police found Glenn Godfrey on the first floor and a
handgun lying near the assailant's body.
Police did not immediately have a motive for the shootings.
Godfrey was public safety commissioner from August 2000
to June of this year. Before that he was director of the Alaska
State Troopers.
Godfrey retired after 32 years with the Department of Public
Safety to accept a position with Koniag Inc., one of 13
regional corporations created in 1971 under the Alaska
Native Claims Settlement Act, which compensated Alaska
Natives for loss of lands historically held.
Godfrey, who was part Aleut, had been a Koniag board
member since 1989 and board chairman since 1996.
Eagle River is about 10 miles northeast of Anchorage.

Seems like I heard that CNN (or the radio; I've had that on all day as I worked
on vehicles in that garage) was reporting that the shooter was an old
girlfriend and that Godfrey had recently broken off a relationship with her and
went back to his estranged wife.
