Remembering Harry Harrison, Former CBS-FM DJ
Harrison has passed away at 89-years-old

January 28, 2020

Joe Cingrana

Today we say so long to former American radio personality WCBS-FM and Jack FM DJ Harry Harrison. He has passed away at 89 years old after battling health issues.

In March 1980, Harrison became the morning personality at WCBS-FM playing oldies.

On April 25th, 1997, New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani issued a proclamation, naming April 25th "Harry Harrison Day" in honor of the city's "second Mayor."

After a 44-year career in New York radio, Harrison left WCBS-FM in March 2003 saying, "I am not retiring." Harrison returned with a Saturday morning show on the station in 2004.

On June 3rd, 2005 WCBS-FM ended the "oldies" format, replacing it with the new "Jack" format, and ending Harrison's time on the station. Although the "oldies" were brought back in 2007 in a modernized form, since then the station has gradually phased out '50s and '60s music for a Classic Hits format.

Harrison was born September 20th, 1930 in Chicago, IL and had been a popular American radio personality, primarily in New York City, for over 50 years.

The WABC guys are all nearly gone. Last year I was channel surfing my brother's satellite radio when I heard an announcer I knew, but I couldn't bring his name to mind. Then he identified himself as Cousin Brucie and I was amazed and shocked. Brucie's voice was completely shot. He maybe the last one left from the rock and roll era of WABC. A friend of mine in NYC who listened to WABC as a kid said the station's signal was so strong back then he could hear it anywhere in town. Nowadays he says there are parts of NYC where he loses the signal.

On a good night you could hear WABC as far away as Colorado, back in
the day. The middle of the AM band can travel pretty far, under the
right conditions.

Harry Harrison
1930 - 2020

Norwood - Harry Harrison, "The Morning Mayor" and Radio Hall of Famer, of Norwood, NJ passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 (amazingly at 1:01 PM) at the age of 89. He was born in 1930 at home on the south side of Chicago. As a teenager Harry attended a seminary and intended to be a priest. But his senior year he was bed ridden with Rheumatic Fever for a year. His saving grace was his radio, he knew then that he wanted to become a Disc Jockey. He left the seminary and began his career which spanned six decades. In 1961 he married the love of his life, Patricia, whom he affectionately called "Pretty Patti". Together they made a home in Norwood where they raised their four children, Patti, Patrick, Michael and Brian Joseph "BJ". He was tragically predeceased by his wife Patti and sons, BJ and Michael with whom he is now with in heaven. He was a devoted husband and father and would go home after his stint on the radio to be with his family.

Although Harry was a part of radio history, having worked at WMCA, WABC, and WCBS FM, and was known as one of the "Original Good Guys", he was also a very humble and charitable person, often donating his time to support local police, fire and emergency services as well as Spectrum for Living and the American Cancer Society.

Visitation will be Monday, February 3, 2020 from 3-8 PM at Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Ave, Northvale, NJ (201-767-3050). A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at 11 AM at St. Anthony's RC Church, Northvale with interment to follow at Rockland Cemetery, Sparkill, NY.

Harry loved animals, in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to your local animal rescue society or to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation.

"Every brand new day should be unwrapped like a precious gift." - Harry Harrison

"Hello, can I speak to Pat?"
"I'm sorry, Pat's out right now."
"In that case, can I speak to Pat?"
"No, I'm sorry, Pat's also out right now."
"OK, in that case, can I speak to Pat?"
"Speaking."

That is truly funny‼️

I guess humor doesn’t need to be dirty, obnoxious, or insulting.

No.

Humor just needs to be funny. That doesn't mean it cannot also be dirty,
obnoxious, or insulting.

Note that jokes are ALWAYS insulting. The joke makes fun of a family
with three people having the same first name.

Comedy: It happened to somebody else.
Tragedy: It happened to you.
