ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) -- The mayor of Alameda was found dead at his home Monday
from what appeared to be a self-inflicted wound, police said.
Police Lt. Jim Brock wouldn't say what type of injury Mayor Ralph Appezzato
had. However, Brock said the mayor apparently committed suicide.
Appezzato's wife found his body after returning from walking the dog, police
said.
Brock said there was no indication of foul play. He said Appezzato was
recently diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Appezzato, 67, had been mayor of Alameda since 1994. Term limits prohibited
him from running again.
Alameda, an island city of about 72,000, is about five miles across the bay
from San Francisco and adjacent to Oakland.

The City of Alemedia's Website: http://www.ci.alameda.ca.us/gov/index.html
has a note on their homepage in remembrance of their now former mayor, who's
term was going to expire in Dec 2002 anyway. As with most websites that
loses a member of it's personnel, they do have the remembrance on their main
page, but the other pages are not updated, so if you go visit their
government page, you get to meet their mayor, and you can either call him or
even better yet email him, but I don't think he will be getting back to you.

The Wiz.....
He ran for county supervisor this year and lost. He sent a pot
holder in the mail with his name and the standard "endorsed by police
and firefighters" crap on it. I have it in my kitchen. The
firefighters organization sent a flyer repudiating any endorsement.
I grew up in Alameda; Alameda politics stinks. Maybe not Willie
Brown level of stink, because there isn't that much cash on the line,
but at least as bad as any other town its size in the Bay Area.
