James Carey, who led several development projects in downtown Muncie as
the city's mayor for eight years, has died. He was 79.
Carey died Monday in Yorktown after a long illness, according to the
Meeks Mortuary.
Carey had a public career that spanned a half century, spending
21 years as a city police officer before being elected as Delaware
County sheriff in 1970. He was tried on bribery charges while sheriff,
but was acquitted in 1972 and went on to win re-election two years
later. He then was the Democratic nominee for mayor five straight
elections. He lost in 1979, then won both in 1983 and 1987 before
losses in 1991 and 1995.
While Carey, long known as "Big Jim," was mayor, he spurred
building of a new city hall, reopening the 1920s-era Roberts Hotel and
construction of a downtown convention center.
Current Mayor Dan Canan defeated Carey in 1995, but said Carey "was
one of the best politicians" he knew.
"He was a larger-than-life figure in Muncie politics," Canan said.
"He not only knew your name but knew your family and their names,
too."
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn, and a son, Michael. Two daughters,
Linda and Corrin Carey, preceded him in death.
May he rest in peace.
Regards to all
His funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church
in Muncie.
