Kumu hula Lydia Kauakahi dies at 49

HONOLULU (AP) _ Kumu hula Lydia Kamakawiwo`ole Kauakahi has died at the
age of 49.

She was the wife of Louis ``Moon'' Kauakahi of The Makaha Sons and the
sister of the late entertainers Israel and Skippy Kamakawiwo`ole.

She was the last of the Kamakawiwo`ole siblings, including sister
Evangeline Leilani, who all died at an early age.

Kauakahi and her Halau Kahauole performed in the early years with her
husband's group when it was known as The Makaha Sons of Niihau.

She had been inactive as a kumu hula recently because of her failing
health, but advised others whenever possible.
She also is survived by a daughter and two grandchildren.
