<The Times September 29, 1959>

<MR. GERARD HOFFNUNG>

Mr. Gerard Hoffnung, 34-year-old artist, humorist, musician and
broadcaster, died suddenly in hospital at Hampstead yesterday. He was
34.

He was born in 1925, the son of Ludwig Hoffnung, educated at Highgate
School and started life as a schoolmaster. Later he became a
free-lance artist and cartoonist illustrating books and drawing for
"Punch". Five books of his musical cartoons have been published and
the sixth "Hoffnung's Acoustics" is due to appear next month. Earlier
this year he published a book of non-musical cartoons.

Hoffnung became widely known also for imaginative music festivals
given at the Royal Festival Hall in 1956 and 1958 in which both
instruments and players departed from the orthodox with startling and
amusing results.

Everyone should have a copy of the album of the original 1956 Hoffnung
Music Festival Concert in their collection. A classic.
