Freckles from the Our Gang shorts has died. His real name was George
Wendelken and he appeared in the very first Hal Roach
comedy films in the 1920s (later known as the Little Rascals).

There was never a character in the "Our Gang/Little Rascals" comedies
named Freckles. This fellow is apparently just another "Our Gang
wanna-be". Of course, he may have acted in another series as Freckles,
but it was certainly not "Our Gang".

Freckles was actually Mickey Daniels (I think that is what his name was).
Leonard Maltin discovered that he died in a hotel room forgotten in 1969. He
and Mary Kornman (his girlfriend in many of the silent films) appeared together
in Hal Roach's The Boyfriends series and one of the talking Our Gang films, the
title of which escapes me now but it had something to do with hooky.
This Freckles fooled his friends and family through the years and they just
passed this bit of nonsense onto the press, which ate it up, just as they did
in 1993, when Buckwheat returned from the grave to bag groceries on 20/20.

take it easy everyone.....yes, George Wendelken did play Frecles in the silent Our gang movies and did other movies as well. To speak negatively about the dead you have have to be some sort of asshole. Im not related to George in any way, but he was kind man and has a great family.

I suppose that this guy could have appeared in a few films. There were often unbilled kids playing bits or serving as extras. More likely, George made up the story to make interesting conversation.
Mickey Daniels WAS called "Freckles" at times. He's long gone.
There was a guy named Jack Bothwell who had a story about his being "Freckles" about 50 years ago. It was much like the Buckwheat nonsense that we all remember. Fake "Our Gang" members have been around for a very long time.
To make up a story claiming to be one of the kids we know (like the fake Buckwheat, Darla, and even Spanky) is very wrong, obviously. To say you're a guy who no one ever heard of maybe isn't so bad.
I used to work with a guy who told everyone that he was in the Sons of the Pioneers. Without home video, the Internet, etc., who would know? Turns out, he sat in with them one afternoon for a few songs and built a fairly successful performing career based on that half-truth. Nobody got hurt.
I would like to think that our buddy George had the same story. Maybe he was in a couple of crowd scenes when the Gang put on a show, had a car race, or played a ball game.

Mr. Wendelken may have been a kind man, but if he claimed to have been in the Our Gang films, he appears to have been pulling a fast one.
Of course, if you have information proving me wrong, please provide it. All you have to do is name one "Our Gang" movie in which he played the part of Freckles, and state where you got your information from. I look forward to any information you can provide. And please refrain from further name-calling.

Angeles Times back in 1998. They read about the same, except that the
L.A. Times added a bit about George having sold $200 million of war
bonds via personal appearances and speeches on the radio. That seems
odd to me.

Jeez, sorry.....I didn't even notice that the modern-day post was in response to one made in '98. I know this stuff is archived, but I didn't think a conversation could pick up so seamlessly one-and-a-half decades later!

The Our Gang films were shot in Culver City, CA and surrounding area. There would be no reason for a Hal Roach unit to travel to St. Louis. Sorry.

So apparently there was a Freckles character in the original Our Gang shorts. George Warde was Freckles in the 1922 short Fire Fighters and he appears in other Our Gang shorts as well. He died in 1986.

Probably a Melton Barker film. A lot of people think they had grandparents in Our Gang, but it's usually a Barker film. It was an interesting idea, but it has led to a lot of confusion all these years later. St. Louis was very likely a town that he set up one of his "Kidnapper's Foil" films.

I am not sure if George Wendelken is actually George Warde as George Warde is clearly older than 6 years old in FIRE FIGHTERS... as well, I have a newspaper article from 1924 that says George Warde is 12 years old (with his photo) which... which means he would be born around 1912, not 1916...so something is not correct with the date of birth that someone put on IMDB. Usually kids would fudge their age a bit to be younger, but this is way off. George Warde was in the Our Gang series, but he was not known as "freckles" on the series. It was a nickname he used in casting directories and may have been a nickname in real life. George Warde looks to be 10-11 years old in Fire Fighters.

I looked at a photo the adult George Wendelken and he does look like he could be George Warde... BUT something is not right with the 1916 DOB. George Warde was also in Little Annie Rooney and if born in 1916 would be only 9 years old in this film... if you look at photos of him in Little Annie Rooney, he clearly is a teenager of 13 or 14 years old.
