George Winston, the celebrated solo pianist who sold more than 15 million albums over the course of his career, died Sunday, June 4 2023. He was 73.

Winston’s death was confirmed on his website. He had been battling cancer for 10 years, undergoing a bone marrow transplant in 2013.

I don't know much about the late Winston's career, but I am curious: did he himself describe his genre as "New Age", or was that a only a term critics used regarding his recordings and that Winston himself resisted?

It's his rendition of variations on Pachelbel's famous Canon in D. I
don't love every variation (he loses me near the end), and I'm the
first to admit that this piece gets played out of proportion to its
inherent merit, but it does have a lot of inherent merit. And this is
a simple, straightforward and heartfelt interpretation.
