Man, 30 years. Time sure does fly. Too bad we can't save it in a bottle.

2.1 Who was Jim Croce?
James Joseph Croce was born January 10, 1943 to James Albert and Flora
Croce. He was married to Ingrid Jacobson, August 28, 1966. They had one son,
Adrian James, born September 28, 1971.
2.2 How did he die?
Jim, Maury Muehleisen and 4 members of his touring company including the
pilot were killed when their Beechcraft D-18 charter plane hit a tree just
past the end of the runway at the airport in Natchitoches, LA, on September
20, 1973.
2.3 Are there any first hand accounts of that night?
Yes. Steve, an officer on the scene, relayed this to me (thanks to Steve and
his wife Mary):
(Again, as in some articles posted on the Media Page, I debated how many of
the details of the plane accident I should post. Again, I've decided this
account helps fill in gaps left from newspaper accounts. Some names have
been
removed for privacy purposes. One note of interest, Steve is the officer
pictured in the photograph of the plane that was printed the next day in
local and national papers.)
"I was working the late shift at the city P.D. in Natchitoches, Louisiana on
the night that Jim had his accident. He had performed at the Prather
Coliseum and his show had ran longer that usual. We had officers (names
removed), and one other officer working in the area of the airport that
night, they were setting up a drug bust in this area. They saw the group of
cars come from the show and go directly to the plane. The officers commented
over the radio that the people had boarded the plane and did not warm it up
much and started to taxi to the runway. The engines were revved one time and
the plane took off. Shortly after the plane left the ground one of the
officers called on the radio that the plane had hit some trees and they saw
it go down. Help was summoned and all units went to the accident scene. The
Coroner for Natchitoches Parish, Charles Cook, came to the scene and
pronounced all of the individuals dead."
"They were transported to First National Funeral Home in Natchitoches were
they were worked on all night by (name removed). As there were several
persons to be transported, the town did not have enough hearses or
ambulances. All were transported to the funeral home in a pick-up truck,
covered, used by the funeral home."
"Later in the morning, before I went home, I drove by the funeral home and
talked with (name removed). He stated that it was one of the worst accidents
he'd worked."
"My job the night of the accident was to keep traffic from coming into the
area as the road where the crash had occurred was under construction and not
open to the public. After the initial investigation, I was left alone to
guard the scene until daylight."
"Frank McInny, a photographer, wanted to take pictures of the wreck. I was
told that no one was supposed to be in the area and was to send everyone off
because of the fuel that was all around the crash site. I had known Frank
several years, a speaking acquaintance, and he talked me into letting him
take the pictures. Frank was the feature photographer for the Shreveport
Times." (I do have a copy of this photo and will post it in the future.)
2.4 What kind of cigars did Jim Croce smoke?
The answer to this question came directly from Jim's cousin, Steve
Angelucci:
"He said that Jim actually very rarely smoked cigars! Seems that was just
part of his "image" -- When he did smoke cigars, they were the small
cigarette sized ones... He mostly smoked cigarettes - but I guess a cigar
has more of the "tough guy" image."

Isn't that the way they say it goes?
Well, let's forget all that, and give me the number if you can find it, So I
can call just to tell 'em I’m fine and to show, I've overcome the blow, I’ve
learned to take it well, I only wish my words could just convince myself,
that it just wasn't real, but that's not the way it feels.
Indeed - R.I.P.

His son, AJ Croce, is a jazz musician. I got to meet and interview him about
three or four years ago, a really nice guy. I got thru the entire interview
without even once mentioning his father; I figured he has to put up with
questions about his father from everybody he meets, and instead we talked about
his jazz music.
