Crew Hadlett Stoneley was born 9 May, 1911, & educated at Blundell's
School, and the Royal Military Academy Woolwich.
Career: represented Gt Britain at the Olympic Games, Los Angeles,
1932; commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Signals, 1931;
captain, 1939; served in the Second World War, 1939-45, (Middle East
and Italy, despatches 1941); GSO (2) GHQ Cairo, 1942; instructor Staff
College 1943, GSO (1) AFHQ 1944; commanded the Royal Signals 1st
Infantry Division, 1944-45; promoted lieutenant-colonel, 1944; Joint
Services Staff College 1948; British Military Mission to Greece (GSO
1) 1949-50; Chief Signals Officer London District, 1951-54; Colonel,
General Staff GHQ, Middle East Land Forces, 1955-57; promoted
Brigadier 1959; Deputy Signal officer-in-chief, War Office, 1958-61;
Deputy Commander Singapore District, 1962-3; retired from the Army,
1964; ADC to Her Majesty the Queen, 1960-64; Colonel Commandant Royal
Signals, 1965-70, &c.
He was appointed OBE in 1945.
Brigadier Stoneley, who lived near Blandford, Dorset, married in 1944,
Sheelagh Moncrieffe Birchenough, (deceased), daughter of William
Bichenough, fo Abergavenny, Monmouthshire.
A Thanksgiving for his life will be held at All Saints Church, Tarrant
Monkton, near Blandford, Dorset, on 11 September, 2002, at 2.30 p.m.
