The Lord Revelstoke, 5th Baron, a member of the Baring dynasty (which
family possess no fewer than five peerages), died in Kenya, 5 June,
2003. He was 68.

He was born the Hon John Baring, 2 December, 1934, elder son of Rupert
Baring, 4th Lord Revelstoke (1911-94), of Lambay Island, Rush, co.
Dublin, by his wife, the Hon Florence (Flora) Fermor-Hesketh,
(1913-71), second daughter of the 1st Lord Hesketh.

John Baring was educated at Eton. His parents divorced when he was 10
years old, and his mother married secondly, in 1944, Lt-Cdr Derek
Lawson, RNVR, son of Sir Arnold Lawson KBE, MD, of Passenham Manor, at
Stoney Stratford, Buckinghamshire.

His ancestor, Edward Charles Baring, (1828-97), was head of the
mercantile firm of Baring Brothers and Co, Bishopgate Street, London,
& was raised to the peerage in 1885.

Lord Revelstoke is a cadet of the Barings Lords Northbrook, and other
peerages held by the family (stricken by financial disaster in 1995)
are the Lords Howick of Glendale, Ashburton, and Earls of Cromer.

A daughter of the 1st Baron Revelstoke - Margaret Baring - married
Viscount Althorp (later 6th Earl Spencer), from whom descends the
Princes William and Harry of Wales.

John Baring succeeded to the barony, 18 July, 1994, on the death of
his father.

He never married.

He leaves a younger brother, and two half-sisters, Arabella and
Caroline.

The peerage now devolves upon his brother, the Hon James Cecil Baring,
born 16 August, 1938, and the heir to the title is the 6th Baron's
elder son, the Hon Alexander Rupert Baring, born 9 April, 1970.

The cremation takes place in Nairobi, followed by a service at Lambay,
Ireland.
