Leonard Burchman Public Affairs Officer

Leonard Burchman, 85, who spent 37 years working as a federal public affairs
officer and spokesman, died March 28 [2010] of a blood disorder at Leisure
World in Silver Spring.

Mr. Burchman was director of press relations for Dwight D. Eisenhower's 1952
presidential campaign in New York, then did public affairs work at the Labor
Department. In the 1960s, he was an adviser to Sen. Kenneth B. Keating
(R-N.Y.) before returning to the Labor Department. In the 1980s, he was a
spokesman for Samuel R. Pierce, secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

He was treasurer of a congressionally established commission to honor the
Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. with a federal holiday.

In 1997, after moving to Leisure World, Mr. Burchman began holding courses
to educate residents on scams targeting seniors. He wrote a column on fraud
and crime for Leisure World's newspaper.

Mr. Burchman was a member and past president of Jewish Residents of Leisure
World.

Leonard Burchman was born in the Bronx, N.Y. He graduated from the
University of Denver and received a master's degree in journalism from
Columbia University. He served in the Army during World War II.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Marilyn Fishman Burchman of Silver
Spring; two sons, Marc Burchman of Rockville and Corey Burchman of Hanover,
N.H.; and four grandchildren.
