I heard on the radio this afternoon on the way home from work that the
former wife of blues-rock guitarist Elvin Bishop (best known for the song
"Fooled Around and Fell in Love" [although he didn't sing it, Mickey Thomas
did]) was found murdered today.

Anyone heard anything else about this? (The DJ was quick to point out that
Bishop is not a suspect in the case.)

I posted a summary of the story in the S.F. Chronicle under the
headline "Double Murder in Marin County"; it was a mistake not to add
"Elvin Bishop's ex-wife" in the header, which you wisely did.

More news from the S.F. Chronicle.

Jennifer Villarin, 45, and James Gamble, 54, were shot multiple times
early Thursday morning; they were house-sitting for Villarin's daughter,
Selina Bishop, 28, who was on a camping trip in Yosemite.

Selina Bishop was supposed to be home by now, but has not been seen.
The police are "concerned for her safety since she is the next of kin of
a homicide victim". (I'm sure it might have crossed their minds that
she might be a suspect, but the cops are usually circumspect about
saying something like that until they have a lot of evidence.)

Also, Selina's boyfriend called the cafe where she worked on Thursday
morning - after the murders - but she didn't show; it had been assumed
that they were on the camping trip together, but this makes it look like
he doesn't know where she is, either.

No disrespect of the dead intended, but this almost reads like a
synopsis of the first couple chapters of a mystery novel. (Not unlike
the the story of the allegedly tee-totaling Chinese-American businessman
beaten to death in a bar in China a few months back.)

p.s. Ms. Vellarin and Mr. Bishop have been divorced for about 20 years
and has not been reached for comment by the S.F. Chronicle; also, they
did not mention if he even lives in the vicinity.

Well, that's what happens when you fool around and fall in love......you get
killed.
Tell me, was Elvin playing golf with O.J. at the time of death?

rangers on my radio scanner for Miss Bishop on Saturday morning.

Latest news is a look-out for the boyfriend; mother and daughter look
alike, and mom was house-sitting, so the cops are worried that the
murders may have been mistaken identity.

News as of Tuesday morning.

The boyfriend, Glenn Helzer of Concord, 30, has been taken into
custody, along with Helzer's brother and an unidentified woman; when
they were arrested on a search warrant based on probable cause due to
the murder investigation, drugs were found on the premises.

Selina Bishop is still missing; Helzer called her workplace the day she
was supposed to return saying he had never seen her and they did not go
to Yosemite together. The police are not commenting, but logic would
dictate that if they believed this story, he would not have been
arrested.

The Chronicle finally got a one sentence comment from Elvin Bishop, who
is "devasted", and justifiably so.

News as of Wednesday morning. (Sorry for my Epstein-esque domination of
this thread, keeping it alive almost singlehandedly, but this is turning
into a big local news story.)

At the home of Glenn Helzer, police found evidence that points to his
possible complicity in another missing person case, that of Ivan and
Annette Stineman of Concord, an elderly couple from Concord, CA., who
haven't been seen since July 29. (Concord is in the East Bay, at least
20 miles away from the scene of the other crime in Marin County.)

On the news last night, police were seen dredging the water near Rio
Vista (again, not particularly close to either crime scene), having
found plastic bags which reportedly contain body parts; no
identification as of the late news last night.

This has been a strange story, it keeps connecting with other stories in the
paper. All three bodies were recovered from the Mokelumne river.

CONCORD, Calif. -- Authorities say three bodies
found in duffle bags in a Sacramento County River
are those of a missing elderly couple and the
22-year-old daughter of blues guitarist Elvin Bishop.

The woman's boyfriend is a suspect in their deaths, a
prosecutor said Wednesday.

The dismembered bodies of Selina Bishop and Ivan
Stineman, 85, and his wife, Annette, 78, were found
in the Mokelumne River on Monday and Tuesday.

Eight duffel bags were found, each containing human
remains. One bag contained a human head, another a
torso. Additional evidence was recovered
Wednesday.

All three victims suffered blunt trauma before they
were dismembered, said Harold Jewett, a Contra
Costa County deputy district attorney.

Police arrested Bishop's boyfriend, Glenn Helzer, 30,
at his home Monday for investigation of robbery,
burglary and other charges unrelated to the Stineman
case. Helzer's brother Justin, 28, and friend Dawn
Godman, 26, also were arrested and charged with
drug possession, Jewett said.

Contra Costa County Deputy District Attorney Hal
Jewett told Superior Court Judge Michael Coleman
that the three "are a threat to the public safety and
there is significant evidence why they should not be
released."

Jewett said the fact that Glenn Helzer is the former
stockbroker of the Stinemans is "an ingredient of
motive behind crimes." As far as the death of Selina
Bishop, "It's a little more of a mystery why Selina
met the end that she did," Jewett said outside the
courtroom.

Jewett said that while in police custody, Glenn Helzer
allegedly made a spontaneous statement that he
knew what happened to the Stinemans.

Jewett also said that the fingerprints of both Justin
Helzer and Godman were found on the missing
couple's abandoned vehicle. He said none of the
three should be given bail because the crimes are
"truly horrible" and "the act of a depraved heart." The
judge denied bail and scheduled a plea date for the
trio on Friday at 8:30 a.m.

None of the three suspects entered a plea
Wednesday. At one point during the hearing, Glenn
Helzer turned to waved at his mother in courtroom,
who only sobbed.

EARLIER UPDATES, MORE INFO

Law enforcement authorities confirmed today that
body parts found by divers in the Sacramento Delta
are those of Ivan Stineman, aConcord man who has
been missing with his wife for more than a week.
Concord police Lt. Paul Crain said an autopsy
conducted by theSacramento County coroner early
this morning found that chopped-upbody parts
retrieved yesterday are those of the 85-year-old man
whodisappeared around July 30.

His identification was confirmed by a thumb print
through the stateDepartment of Motor Vehicles.
Other body parts are those of a female, although the
coroner has yet to confirm if they are from his wife,
78- year-old Annette Stineman.

The grisly news comes as the latest twist in two
high-profilecases. The first involves the
disappearance of the Stinemans inConcord, and the
second involves the disappearance of Marin
Countyresident Selina Bishop, whose mother and
mother's friend were foundshot to death last
Thursday in Bishop's Woodacre home. Authorities on
Monday arrested Bishop's boyfriend, Glenn
TaylorHelzer and two others on drug charges and
consider him "a possiblesuspect" in the cases.

Evidence found at the scene of the arrests at a
Concord house hasprovided authorities with a
possible link to the cases, althoughpolice have not
said what they found at the Concord home. Marin
County Sheriff's Sgt. Doug Pittman said the
SacramentoCounty Sheriff's Office contacted Marin
authorities early yesterdayafternoon when a boater
or water skier found a duffel bag with whatappeared
to be human body parts inside.

Since then, three duffel bags have been found and
diverscontinue to search for more in the murky
waters of the Delta nearBrannan Island, Pittman
said.Marin authorities still considering Selina Bishop
as a missingperson. The 22-year-old-daughter of
blues guitarist Elvin Bishopdisappeared last
Wednesday.

Police said Bishop's mother, Jennifer Villarin, 45,
who residesin Novato and Woodacre, and James
Gamble, 54, of Mendocino Countywere shot multiple
times on Aug. 3 at Bishop's studio apartment at257
Redwood Drive in Woodacre.Bishop was reportedly
going camping at Yosemite National Parkwith Helzer
and was scheduled to return to work at the Two
BirdCafe in Marin on Friday but never showed up,
authorities said.Bisop was last spotted with Helzer at
a microbrewery in Berkeley onAug. 2.
