We should have seen #1700 by now.

Thanks for this surely-painstakingly-compiled roster, Derek!

It's remarkable that the entire Apollo 8 crew still survives here in 2023. (Just wish Commander Borman did TV interviews these days more than once in a, uh, blue moon. Hope his camera-shyness isn't due to ill health.)

While understandably, Armstrong and Aldrin are justly remembered by EVERYONE--and what that unlucky Apollo 13 trio endured and pulled off (with terrific assists by those many no-name engineers down in Houston) have been immortalized by Hollywood, little ol' NASA buff me (beholding it all only on TV) always considered Apollo 8 to be the boldest NASA mission OF ALL...even though they didn't (lunar) land--or even take along a Grumman LEM to do so.

(And yeah, the Apollo 8 live-TV lunar-orbit Christmas Eve reading from The Bible was a lovely touch--even to a decided nonbeliever like myself--to add to their historic jaunt; it WAS the first time in the annals of humanity that humans ever left the vicinity of Earth, after all.)

Professional atheist and rabble rouser Madalyn Murray O'Hair hated it. The Bible reading, in hindsight, proved to be quite worthwhile especially if it pissed her off.

I self-described as an atheist from about age 15 to about my mid-50's,
and I am still fundamentally irreligious (though not so hard-core
anymore about the A-word). I loathed O'Hair like I have loathed few
others in my life, and basically anything that made her upset or angry
was inherently and ipso facto a positive good.

It's been a while since I brought this up, but I just feel like
mentioning that Lovell's grave marker (a huge, impressive marble
monument) has been in the Naval Academy cemetery for *over 15 years*
and as far as I know, neither he nor Marilyn has so much as a cold.

My in-laws are buried there, so I go there frequently (maybe 8-10
times a year). I once caught a tour guide saying that Lovell was
actually buried there. I walked over and gave the whole group the
benefit of my wisdom on the subject. (The guide was very gracious
about it and promised to modify his future presentations.)

Are you talking about Apollo 17? Is this some L.E. weirdness or just
a simple mistake? Apollo 17 flew successfully 50 years ago last
month.

<dropping shields>

In the '70s, I worked in the building where E.T.C. Studios was located.
This was an outfit that was able to feed live programming to Manhattan
Cable's public-access channels (the owner had strung a length of coax
across the alley between buildings), so all the hosts headed there to
do their call-in shows. I'd see O'Hair around all the time. She was
an unpleasant person who kept unpleasant company. I was not
particularly surprised at the way it all ended some years later.

Well, hello there.

I've read perhaps 5-10 accounts of personal encounters with, or
knowledge of, O'Hair. None of them disagreed at all with your
assessment of "unpleasant," though that might be the mildest
formulation I've seen.

I am talking about the persons in question being identified
by the order in which they ranked among the 12 persons who have
walked on the moon so far...that one of them was on Apollo 17
might have caused the confusion whereby the two were both
called the 17th man on the moon, but there has so far been no
17th moonwalker.(Someone from 13th to 17th is expected to be
the first woman on the moon).

That already happened. It was a Russian wo-- oh, wait, I'm
confusing fiction with reality again.
