Erik Gates of 'Mythbusters' Dies, Fell Through Skylight

Erik Gates, a rocketry expert who appeared on several episodes of
Mythbusters, died. Gates was working on a roof when he fell through a
skylight and plummeted 30 feet to his death. Aside from his four guest
appearances on the Discovery Channel hit series Mythbusters Gates was
the owner of firm Gateco Electric.

Gates was working with his brother, the President and CEO of Xirrus
Inc., on a website owned by his brother, Dirk Gates' corporation. Both
Erik and his brother were interested in rocketry to the point where they
ran an amateur rocket website showcasing their rockets.

The Mythbusters regular suffered blunt force chest injuries from his
fall on December 27, 2009. He was doing electrical work on the roof at
the time of the fall.

Gates appeared on Mythbusters' pilot episode in 2003.

The Monday evening (29-Dec) upisode, which, among other
clips, looked at the "Gorn Canon" from Star Trek [a],
had an "in memory of Erik Gates" slide at the end.

[a] In that episode Kirk and the captain of
a Gorn ship (looking like a giant lizard) were
grabbed by the Metlocs and placed on a deserted
planet where they could fight to the death.

The Gorn was physcially tougher, but Kirk
discovered what, in the show, were the raw
materials for making a cannon, gunpowder, and
a projectile [b], and he used it to shoot
and injure (but NOT kill!) the Gorn.

[b] bamboo for the cannon body, charcoal
and sulphur for the gunpoweder, and giant
diamonds for the projectile.

- Oh, the Mythbusters folk decided it
wouldn't work. But I disagree with them...

I guess they won't be doing a walking on a skylight episode any time soon.

The slate was on the episode that ran on 28 Dec at 9 pm ET, too.

In Memory of
Erik Gates
A true, honorary MythBuster
1962-2009

Under that was a picture of Adam, Gates and Jamie.

I'm pretty sure it was busted.
