Two teenagers allegedly stole the skeleton of a Broadway actor, and
took it to a party dressed as Darth Vader.

Michael Herz, 18, and Michael Sossi, 17, from New York, are accused of
taking the skeleton of Elmer Grandin, who died in 1938, and two other
skulls interred in a Long Island crypt.

Police claim the teenagers fitted the skeleton with a costume of the
Star Wars villain, then took it to a schoolfriend's party.

Detective Brian McMenemy said: "Herz dressed up the full body with
glasses, and then they put a Darth Vader mask on him."

Grandin, who was born on 1861, appeared in several Broadway shows and
silent movies. The teenagers were arrested in December following the
alleged prank in November.

Police said they launched an investigation after teachers overheard
the boys bragging about the incident. Herz and Sossi are charged with
cemetery desecration, body stealing and opening a grave. A third man,
Patrick O'Rourke, 19, is charged with receiving a stolen body. All
three deny the charges and have been released on bail. The bones,
which were found dumped in a ditch, have since been reinterred at the
Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Upon receiving news that Michael Rhodes had made the remarks below, and
after consultations with my Joint Chiefs of Staff, being briefed by members
of my Cabinet and telephone conversations with various world leaders, I have
come to the following conclusions:

The rest of the story is unimportant Michael, what *is* important is this:

Did Elmer Grandin have a good time at the party?

How does that old saying go ... 'If you can't get rid of the skeltons in your
closet, at least teach them how to dance funny.'

Funny, ain't it, what teens consider "eew, gross" and joke material.

Now tell me the difference between these charges and, say, the work
that archeologists do. Take your time.

I thought all they had to do was just 'hang loose' and follow their
partner. You mean, they need lessons? I'll bet the music selection
is comprised of one tune: "Dry Bones"...dem bones, dem bones, dem ...
dry bones...

btw, I don't believe any of Red's family are in the closet...unless
they are "skeletons".

somehow I smell a rat. Only in anatomy classes would you see a skeleton as
we think of a skeleton, because all the bones have been wired together. In
this case, if the kids stole the bones out of a crypt, they would all have
been disconnected, and so, just how did they dress this bunch of bones up to
go to a party? sounds like the beginnings of a great urban legend...or
just plain BS.

You do have a point, I confess. Of course, it depends upon how much
adipocere has formed on the corpse and other decompositional factors.
But it is indeed unlikey that a skeletonized corpse would remain
intact through disinterment and transport -- unless it was embalmed by
ethanol saturation like John Paul Jones, thereby ensuring preservation
of cartilage.

Either the "yutes" appropriated a cadaver from a lab, or else this is
a very neat urban legend. Either way, it rocks!

Ever see the scene in 'Wild Angels' when the recently deceased
character played by Bruce Dern is propped up with a joint in his mouth
in the back of the church to watch his own funeral? It also rocked!

I've heard it this way: "If you have skeletons in your closet you might
as well make them come out and dance". That is the only way I have
heard it, and that could have been someone trying to quote the original.

After the party, an archaeologist writes a lengthy treatise about it.
