LOS ANGELES (AP) - Meredith MacRae, who played comely country girl Billie Jo
Bradley in the 1960s sitcom ``Petticoat Junction,'' died Friday from brain
cancer. She was 56.
MacRae played Billie Jo from 1966-70 on the CBS series, which starred Bea
Benaderet as the widowed owner of the Shady Rest Hotel and mother of three
eye-catching daughters who helped run the Hooterville establishment.
MacRae was born in Houston to a Hollywood family: Her father was the late
actor-singer Gordon MacRae, who played the lovesick cowboy Curly in
``Oklahoma!'' Her mother is actress-comedian Sheila MacRae (``The
Honeymooners'').
Meredith MacRae made her film debut at age 7 in ``By the Light of the Silvery
Moon'' (1953), which starred her father and Doris Day. Her first TV series was
``My Three Sons,'' in which she played Sally, the love interest for Mike (Tim
Considine) from 1963-65.
She launched a TV talk show career with ``Mid-Morning L.A.,'' which she
co-hosted with Geoff Edwards. It ran for eight years and won her a local Emmy
in 1986.
MacRae worked with a variety of charities and civic groups including the League
of Women Voters, Women in Film and the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation. She
served as the foundation's telethon host for two decades.

Well, I didn't have a huge crush on them, but they were definitely
honeys; I think I felt the same way you did, Tom, when I read her obit.
An actress with a (relatively) brief career when she was young and
beautiful, forever gorgeous in re-runs and publicity stills from the
era, makes it feel like someone who is in her twenties has died. (Not to
disrespect the tragedy of a woman dying at only 56.)
Ever notice that "Shady Rest" sounds more like a cemetery than a hotel?

Yes, it did show up, as did several other threads with the same info,
some posted late Friday night and others Saturday morning.

Francine Langstrom was the wife of the Man-Bat, Kirk Langstrom, and she
eventually became a Woman-Bat herself. "Dr. March" doesn't ring a
bell.

About a year ago I heard on the radio that Meredith MacRae had a brain tumor
removed. The tabloids picked up on the story, reporting that she had been
having bad headaches for about a week, so she went to a health club thinking
that a massage might loosen the tension and get rid of the headache. During
the massage she passed out and was taken to the hospital, where the tumor was
discovered and removed. At that time, Meredith told the tabloids that they had
removed all the cancer and her prognosis was great. Either that was true and
the disease snuck up on her again, or she and her family managed to keep the
illness hidden from the public all this year until her death. Whatever the
case, a very sad story.
I poked around and found the official website.
http://www.petticoat-junction.com/ will get you there,though
http://members.xoom.com/pjdave/pjdave/pj_contents.htm is the real address.
The man's as much of an insider as a fan can be,learned of MacRae's death
via same-day phone call from Linda Kaye Henning, has scans from the
Hennings' personal scrapbooks...and says that MacRae never really
recovered from the tumor.
