BELMONT, Calif. (AP) - Douglas Springsteen, the father of Bruce
Springsteen and the inspiration for some of his son's ballads, died
Sunday. His age was not known.
The elder Springsteen worked at a variety of jobs. He did factory work
in a rug mill, drove a cab and worked as a prison guard.
In many of his songs, Bruce Springsteen sang about the difficult
relationship he had with his father. In ``Adam Raised a Cain,'' he sang,
``Daddy worked his whole life for nothing but the pain, now he walks
these empty rooms looking for something to blame/You inherit the sins
you inherit the flames.''

Who really cares about Bruce's father? I sure don't.
And I sure don't care that you don't care.

I got to meet him in the early 1980s -- one of his jobs was as a bus driver
for SamTrans (San Mateo County Transit). My mother, who lived in Burlingame,
CA (2 towns over from Belmont) used to ride his route and when I joined her on
a trip once she introduced me.
I was privately skeptical, since I assumed that unless they were estranged,
Bruce would have assured a comfortable retirement for him instead of a 9-5
job, but who knows.
