They weren't related by blood, but they were boyfriend and girlfriend.

Here's the late Mr. Snoddy: http://www.divorcenet.com/Members/tsnoddy1

There is something vaguely familiar about him. I noticed that he was a
1976 grad of the UK Accounting program; I'm a 1981 grad of the same
program. I'm pretty sure that I met him somewhere along the line,
either at school or working in the Lexington area.

All of those people from Gall's, Inc. worked here:
http://www.galls.com/

Gall's was originally Phillip Gall's Sporting Goods in downtown
Lexington. Old man Gall and his son sold huntin' and fishin' stuff and
had a small department on the second floor devoted to police gear.
After they sold the store some other folks came along and developed the
police gear line into a very large company (I presume that they are the
largest police and fire outfitters in the nation now).

Bart Frederick, of Danville is listed among the dead. My mom, who
lives in Danville, thinks that's a relative of a friend of hers but
hasn't been able to confirm. Mom tells me that if she's correct he was
a young drug company salesman getting relocated to Atlanta.

All very sad. May they rest in peace.

Galls (without the apostrophe) is an awesome online retailer. I got
one of the best flashlights I have ever owned from them. They are
fast, cheap and reliable.

Not only did they drop the apostrophe as the company evolved, but I'm
not even sure that "Old Man Gall" was named Gall. I'm pretty sure that
he wasn't named Phillip as a matter of fact. I heard the story once --
Phillip was a relative perhaps -- but that was many years ago.

He was a bit of a gruff character and was just that -- a real character
in the downtown Lexington business community. He was pretty much
single-handedly responsible for the cancellation of a downtown
Lexington criterium (short course bicycle race) because he got several
other merchants together and they objected to the traffic stoppages,
etc.

I don't believe that I ever did any business with the old man, but his
son was an archery enthusiast and I bought some odds and ends from him.

I got

Dunno about cheap but they usually don't make you feel like you have
been ripped off or anything, let's put it that-a-way. They seem to have
an excellent inventory. I buy a fair amount of the 5.11 clothing and
have for years -- like back when the 5.11 pants were part of Royal
Robbins (without the apostrophe) line of outdoor clothing rather than
being a separate line of police gear. And when we owned a truckin'
company I would buy my light bars and flashing lights pretty much
exclusively from Gall's (or Galls even) because they were pretty good
about having a wide selection at a fair price and, even better -- spare
parts.

I'll bite JD. What flashlights are you buying? Anything fancier than
a 5x D-cell Maglite?

Which brings to mind a little event back when I was
a NYC paramedic. One day we decided to check the
flashlights people carried (personal equipment, not
issude by teh city). A very significant number of
the very large Maglites used by the day folk
didn't turn on...

(I never carried one of the huge ones, making due - as
I still do - with the AA mini-Mags and a AAA one
in my pocket.)

A previous version of

http://www.galls.com/style.html?assort=general_catalog&style=FL497&cat=2831

and a helmet-mountable light they no longer seem to carry.

I suspect that you and I both know why they didn't work ... and it
wasn't a reliability issue either ;)

Photo at a Tropic of Cancer marker on a small mountain range south of
Victoria, Tamaulipas, MX. That black thing hanging down between the
two antennas is a very well worn Maglite:
