Volkswagen to end production of Beetle, says report

THU June 5 2003
http://www.drudgereport.com/flash1.htm

Stuttgart, Germany (dpa) - German car manufacturer Volkswagen plans to
cease production of the VW Beetle next month, the Stuttgarter
Nachrichten reported in its issue to hit newsstands Friday.

The last VW Beetle will leave the production line in Puebla, Mexico at
the end of July, marking the end of a nearly 70-year history and more
than 21.5 million cars, the newspaper said.

At present, only 53 Beetles daily are being produced in Puebla. A VW
spokesman said the production of the car was nearing the end, but the
exact time had yet to be decided.

The last Beetle to be made in Europe left the production lines in
Germany in 1978.

A sad day for one of my favourite cars. My last Beetle blew its #3
cylinder just outside Oaxaca, Mexico in the early 70's. It took almost
2 months for me to get the engine rebuilt ... most of the time waiting
for the parts from Puebla. It turned out to be a life saver because I
was late for the job I was driving down to take in El Salvador and the
man who offered me the job and two other employees were murdered by
persons unknown (execution style - either revolutionaries or
government thugs). It's very likely that I would have been with them
had I been in time.

Finally, I took a bus to Puebla with the idea of confronting the
manager. Instead, I was referred to a rather tall, physically
intimidating German with a long, thin scar running down his right
cheek. I'm almost 6.3" and my eyes were level with his granite chin.
He looked like a comic book Nazi, right up to the duelling scar and
blond going grey crewcut. He didn't look over 50 so it's doubtful that
have been anything but a 'Hitler youth' during WWII, but he sure
looked the part. My Spanish wasn't all that hot, and he seemed
comfortable conversing in English (albeit with a strong German
accent). He never once smiled or give me any reason to believe that I
was worthy of his attention. But the parts arrived in Oaxaca just a
few days later and the car was fixed just in time for me to become
involved in a kidnapping. Otra vez ... ÿbob

Hats off, and a moment of silence.

It's interesting looking at the VW of Mexico site at
http://www.vw.com.mx/CWE/home/HOM001Inicio/

; what is listed as a Beetle is really the new Beetle. What we think of as
being the classic Beetle is called a Sedan.

Not sure when they stopped production on the VW Thing and the second generation
VW Van, but in 1998 there were Vans running around with radiators added to the
fronts and I was under the impression that they were still in production, but
using a water cooled motor rather than the original air cooled motors.

The Morgan 4/4 is still in production even though the first one came out in
1936. They only make about 500 of these a year, though.

The old Beetles (God, I want to misspell that!) were being made in
Mexico into the 1980s. They may never have stopped. There was a guy
in northern New Jersey around 1982 who was making a fortune importing
the Mexican Beetles and upgrading them to US DOT standards. (Had
something to do with seat belts, bigger running lights, stuff like that
IIRC.) I remember because he was selling the Bugs all over the
country, and his only advertising was word of mouth.

And then there was the popular parody ad in The National Lampoon
magazine during the mid-70s which contained the statement, "If Ted
Kennedy had driven a Volkswagen, he'd be president today."
[ because real VW Beetle ads exclaimed the virtues of the cars being
considerably watertight, and, alluding to the Chappaquiddick incident

I would be content nowadays just to be able to get in and out of a Beetle
without having to take a nap afterwards. ;-)~

Scared me. I thought that you were going to say that you needed to take a nap
after getting in and out of a girl in a Volkswagen ... ;)
