Robert E. Stevens CIA Officer, Theater Figure

Robert E. Stevens, 80, a retired CIA analyst and editor who often appeared
as an actor and worked in behind-the-scenes capacities in Washington DC
theaters, died January 31, 2009, of heart disease at his home on Capitol
Hill [Washingotn DC].

Mr. Stevens was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and served in the Army during
the Korean War. He received many academic honors at American University and
graduated cum laude in 1953.

He then joined the CIA, where he worked as a writer, editor, political
analyst and senior manager until his retirement in 1974.

Mr. Stevens had a long interest in the theater and acted in plays at the
Arena Stage, the Kennedy Center, the Folger Theatre and other local stages.

From 1976 to 1983, he was literary manager of what was then known as the
Folger Shakespeare Theatre, reading and evaluating plays for potential
production. He held a similar position as script reader at Arena Stage in
1982 and 1983.

Mr. Stevens was the author of seven unproduced plays. He took graduate
courses in theater at American University and Catholic University, taught
acting at AU in the late 1970s and general theater courses at Georgetown
University in the early 1980s.

In 1986, he was a founding member of the Washington Stage Guild. He was also
a nominator for the Helen Hayes Awards for Washington theater.

He had no immediate survivors.
