The dean of Washington, DC, traffic reporters, Walt Starling, who had
been diagnosed with colon cancer last spring, died early Tuesday [?
January 4, 2004, or December 28, 2004 ?] at his home in Laytonsville,
Maryland, at the age of 52.
Starling parlayed a pilot's license, and a term paper on airborne
traffic reporting, into a career that covered more than 20 years and
more than 2,200,000 air miles. Most of that time was spent at 1,200
feet circling the Washington Beltway in a two-seat Cessna. Thousands of
Washingtonians were directed around traffic jams that Starling viewed
from the air.
>From 1974 until the mid-1990's Starling reported traffic for WAVA,
WASH, WPGC, WLIT and WARW. He later worked as an assignment editor for
WRC-TV.

There's a young woman named Alison Starling who recently began
anchoring in the DC market (WJLA Channel 7, I think), but I haven't
been able to find out if she's related to Walt. She's young enough to
be a daughter or a niece.
