MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A Montgomery man paroled in September is charged in
a fatal shooting at the same spot when he shot another man to death 15
years ago.

Leon Carmichael Jr., 31, was arrested Thursday at a relative's home at
Sardis in Dallas County and returned to Montgomery to face capital
murder charges in the death of 27-year-old Judge Jackson.

Jackson, 27, died Wednesday night at Troy and Bellview streets, in the
same intersection where Carmichael shot a man to death in 1991,
according to court records.

Carmichael and Jackson reportedly had an ongoing dispute, said police
spokesman Capt. Huey Thornton.

The shooting chilled Gertrude Davis, 61, whose son, Robert James Sole,
died in a shooting at the same intersection 15 years ago.

"It just brought back all the memories of my son's death," she told
the Montgomery Advertiser.

Carmichael, then 16, was charged with Soles' murder as an adult. He
pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. He served 14
years and was paroled in September.

Carmichael's son arrested in death

The son of the former owner of the Carmichael Center stands accused of
a killing nearly identical to one he was convicted of 15 years ago.

Leon Carmichael Jr., 31, was arrested Thursday at a relative's home at
Sardis in Dallas County and returned to Montgomery to face capital

murder charges.

Judge Jackson, 27, died Wednesday night at Troy and Bellview streets,

in the same intersection where Carmichael shot a man to death in 1991,
according to court records.

Jackson was sitting in a car with another person when a second car
drove up, witnesses told police. A passenger in the second car got out
and opened fire into the first car, hitting Jackson at least twice.

Carmichael and Jackson reportedly had an ongoing dispute, said police
spokesman Capt. Huey Thornton.

The mother of Robert James Sole, the man who died in 1991, learned of
Jackson's death from the television news. The similarities of the
crimes chilled Gertrude Davis, 61, of Montgomery.

Soles, too, died of multiple gunshot wounds in the intersection of
Troy and Bellview. He was 28.

"It just brought back all the memories of my son's death," said Davis,
who learned Thursday that Carmichael was accused of killing Jackson.

Carmichael, then 16, was charged with Soles' murder as an adult. He
pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. He served 14
years and was paroled in September.

An anonymous tip led police to Carmichael on Thursday, Thornton said.
He is being held without bond in the Montgomery County jail.

Carmichael's father, Leon Carmichael Sr., is in federal prison,
awaiting sentencing for drug trafficking and money laundering
convictions. The Carmichael Center, an entertainment venue, now
belongs to the federal government.
