LONDON (AP) - Actor Peter Jeffrey, an admired performer in British television and radio,
has died of cancer, his family said Sunday. He was 70.

The actor, who had been suffering from prostate cancer, died Saturday at his home in
Oxhill, near Stratford-on-Avon.

Jeffrey, one of the talented group of British character actors whose faces and
performances are better known than their names, was most familiar to audiences abroad as
Bulstrode in the 1994 BBC television mini-series ``Middlemarch.''

In films, he played Gen. Wadafi in ``Return of the Pink Panther'' in 1974, and Ahmet in
1978's ``Midnight Express.''

``He went quickly at the end,'' his wife, Jill, said Sunday. ``He had been given a few
weeks to live but he died unexpectedly while he was at home with his family for
Christmas.''

In addition to many performances in individual TV shows, he played Mr. Peabody in the 1984
mini-series ``Jewel in the Crown,'' Col. Bernwood in the 1993 Dennis Potter TV series
``Lipstick On Your Collar,'' and Mr. Bruff in the 1996 TV drama ``The Moonstone.''

In addition to his wife, Jeffrey is survived by five children from a previous marriage,
and by his wife's two children.

Cheers,

Is there a picture of him anywhere on the web? I loved "Lipstick on Your
Collar," but I can't place which of the officers was Col. Bernwood.

He was the officer commanding the Whitehall section in which the lad
worked.

Big nose, mustache and warts (he made an ideal Cromwell) - not the
best-looking of actors, but he had a hell of a stage presence!

Your description confirms my thoughts.

Yes, he played many parts that I enjoyed.

RIP.
