A famed Detroit backup musician for singers like Smokey Robinson is
dead, Local 4 reported. Police say the man was shot and killed outside
a Highland Park party store Sunday night.
Carl Cotton -- who sang professionally since 1981 with groups like
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles and the Detroit rhythm and blues
group Enchantment -- was shot and killed outside a party store on
Hamilton and Geneva streets in Highland Park, according to police.
"When sheriff's deputies arrived, they found the subject lying on the
ground in the parking lot bleeding from the gunshot wounds," said
Larry Meyer, Wayne County undersheriff.
Deputies say Cotton (pictured, left) got into a argument with a man
inside the store and the fight spilled out into the parking lot. The
man at some point apparently opened fire on Cotton.
"Right now we have one suspect in custody and we're seeking another
for questioning," Meyer said.
The suspect in custody is apparently Cotton's barber, Local 4
reported.
Investigators continue to search for another person believed to be
involved in the incident.
Members from the group Enchantment will perform a concert on October 4
in memory of Cotton.
Man, talk about a clip job!
Sorry, couldn't resist.
