Sir Bernard Alexander Brocas Burrows, GCMG, (1910-2002)
Michael Rhodes
May, 2002, aged 91, was a retired diplomat, a former British
Ambassador to Turkey, & Permanent British Representative to the North
Atlantic Council.
He was born 3 July, 1910, the son of Edward Henry Burrows and Ione,
daughter of Alexander Macdonald.
He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Oxford, and entered HM
Foreign Service (later Diplomatic Service), 1934.
Burrows served at HM Embassy, Cairo, 1938-45; Foreign Office, 1945-50;
Counsellor, HM Embassy, Washington, 1950-53; Political Resident in the
Persian Gulf, 1953-58; Ambassador to Turkey, 1958-62.
He was Deputy Under-Secretary of State, Foreign Office, 1963-66;
Permanent British Representative to the North Atlantic Council,
1966-70; retired from the Diplomatic Service in 1970.
He was Director-General, Federal Trust for Education and Res.,
1973-76.
His publications include: (with C.Irwin) Security of Western Europe,
1972; Devolution or Federalism, 1980; (with G. Edwards) The Defence of
Western Europe, 1982; Footnotes in the Sand, 1990; &c.
Burrows, of East Dean, Chichester, West Sussex, was appointed CMG in
1950, advanced to KCMG five years later, and GCMG in 1970.
He married in 1944, Ines, daughter of John Walter, by whom he had one
son, Rupert, and one daughter, Julia.
Lady Burrows died in 1997. His death notice says he was *much loved
companion of Julie.*
A humanist service will be held at Chichester Crematorium, Wednesday
15 May, 2002, at 1.30 p.m.
