I just got a letter from Pamela Clatworthy's daughter, telling me that
her mother had died. Pam was in her late eighties or early nineties, I
believe.
Pamela Clatworthy was the only child of famed actress and singer
Gertrude Lawrence, and had a very interesting childhood, divided
between exclusive private schools in England, where she spent about
half her time, and a suite at the Plaza Hotel in New York, where she
lived whenever her mother was in a play that had a long Broadway run.
When I knew Pam she was in her seventies and eighties, and was the
eccentric elderly English nanny to a motherless family who lived down
the street from me. The kids were being single-parented by a hard
working dad, and Pam came into residence to do light housekeeping, look
after the young ones, and "be there" when they got home from school.
She was a painter, a poet and a free spirit who, to celebrate her 80th
birthday, sailed around the world -- as a working crew member on a
boat!
I don't know her exact date of death; her daughter's letter didn't say,
but I did worry when I got no reply to my Christmas card this past
December. She was always very good about sending cards and letters.
In most biographies of Gertrude Lawrence there is a school photo of
Pam, taken when she was about twelve. She always hated that picture!
Said it made her look "a right twit," but I thought she looked lovely.
She was a good friend and will be missed.
In addition to her daughter Sarah, Pam is survived by her son, jazz
musician Benn Clatworthy.

Thank you so much for this post. Not for just the news, but
the back story which I greatly enjoyed reading. She sounded
wonderful.

Pamela Clatworthy would have been somewhere between 79 and 82 when she
died - her parents were married from 1924 to 1927, and had she been
born out of wedlock there would have certainly been some talk.

>From Gertrude Lawrence's Broadway schedule, I'm guessing she was born
in 1925, which would have made her 81 some time this year.

Not so. Lawrence and her husband were married 1917-1927, however, they separated shortly after they were married and went their separate ways so the daughter had to have been born in 1918 making her around 88 at the time of her death.

Pam was also survived by her son Tom Clatworthy, a skilled cabinet maker who lives in the flat his Artist father lived in.
