Oakland Co. exec's son dies in snowmobile accident

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson’s 28-year-old son died
early this morning following an accident on a small lake in Genesee
County when the snowmobile he was a passenger on collided with another
snowmobile.

The Genesee County Sheriff’s Department said today that Brooks
Patterson, a Lake Orion father of three, died about 2 this morning
after suffering injuries in the crash. Another man was driving the
snowmobile on Lake Shinanguag in Atlas Township when it collided with
another vehicle on the frozen lake. The accident occurred at 10:47
last night.

Sheriff’s officials said Patterson’s snowmobile was emerging from a
cove-like area when the other snowmobile struck it. The 48-year-old
driver of Patterson’s snowmobile, whose name was not released,
apparently owns property on the lake and was listed in critical
condition.

Officials said the lake is used primarily by people with homes around
it and they receive few complaints. There are no restrictions on
people using the lake for snowmobiling that officials new about.

A family friend said Patterson and his wife had their third child, a
daughter, in December.

Thanks. I swear the previous one worked at that time, but I noticed
that this corrected URL is a more in-depth story, including survivors.
The first URL was probably a first release.

Sorry, I missed that part.

In Maine most sledding accidents involve alcohol and speed. We just had our
first fatality last week. The guy was speeding, OUI and hit a tree.

More:

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson’s son died in a
snowmobile crash this weekend in Atlas Township.

S. Brooks Patterson, 28, was a passenger on a snowmobile with Robert
Slade, 48, when another snowmobile, driven by Jason Anderson, 34,
collided with theirs at a high speed, police said.

Sheriff's investigators said that Patterson and Slade were not wearing
helmets.

The crash occurred at a point along the shoreline around 10:45 p.m.
Saturday. The victims were treated by Genesee County Sheriff
Department paramedics and then transported to a nearby hospital.

Patterson died from his injuries. Slade is reported to be in good
condition Monday, while Anderson remains in critical.

The cause of the crash is under still under investigation.

According to the Genesee County Sheriff's Department, Anderson has
been caught three times driving a motor vehicle while impaired. He has
had his license suspended in the past, and was driving on a restricted
license over the weekend, police said.

Investigators would not comment if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
They said they are waiting on results of blood tests.

Funeral arrangements have been set for Patterson.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Feb. 13 from 1-9 p.m. at Coats Funeral
Home in Waterford Township, which is located at 3141 Sashabaw Road.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 14 at Bridgewood
Church located at 6765 Rattalee Lake Road in Clarkston.

Family asks for memorial donations to be sent to:

I don't know how this guy got a restricted license. The last thing he should
be driving is a sled.

Brooks Stuart Patterson, Lake Orion
Outdoorsman 'as fine as fine can be'

By Oralandar Brand-Williams / The Detroit News

In his leisure time, Brooks Stuart Patterson was an avid outdoorsman.

He owned Nomadica Redevelopment, a Lake Orion-based land development
company, and was a deeply spiritual man who had a personal
relationship with Jesus, his family said.

Mr. Patterson of Lake Orion died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, in Genesys
Hospital in Grand Blanc of injuries he suffered in a snowmobiling
accident Saturday. He was 28 and the son of Oakland County Executive
L. Brooks Patterson.

"Young Brooksie was as fine as fine can be," said Michael Zehnder, the
director of public services for Oakland County, referring to Mr.
Patterson by his nickname.

One of Zehnder's children went to high school with the younger
Patterson.

Survivors include his wife, Jessie; his children, Ryder, Luke and
Marlee Tru; his parents, L. Brooks and Kathy Patterson; a brother,
Dayne Rogers; and two sisters, Mary Warner and Shawn Sutherland.

Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today at Coats Funeral Home, 3141
Sashabaw Road, Waterford.

Funeral services for Mr. Patterson will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the
Bridgewood Church, 6765 Rattalee Lake Road, Clarkston.

Shuttle services will be available for those attending the funeral.

The shuttles will run from the American Legion in Clarkston, the
Calvary Lutheran Church in Clarkston and the North Oaks Church across
the street from Bridgewater Church and the Nickelodeon just north of
the church.

A luncheon will immediately follow the funeral at Deer Lake Athletic
Club, 6167 White Lake Road in Clarkston.

Memorial tributes may be sent to a scholarship fund set up to benefit
Mr. Patterson's three young children.

Checks should be made out to the "Scholarship Fund for the Patterson
Children" and mailed to the Clarkston State Bank, 15 South Main St.,
Clarkston, MI 48346.
