Heard on the radio this morning that Kevin Wilkinson, the drummer
for the "rock" (matter of opinion) group "Squeeze," was found hanged
over the weekend, an apparent suicide. A quick search on this group
revealed no reports, so I am skeptical.

Reinforcing my skepticism was a statement from another band member
that said he'll be missed, and by the way the band "has an opening for
a drummer who isn't suicidal." The DJ's who read this "news" (matter
of opinion, again) item expressed shock at that statement, so it
wasn't just a couple of morning drive goofballs screwing around.

Has anyone heard anything about this, particularly that alleged
statement?

So you did, as a more intelligent search just revealed. Oops.

I have removed the "?" from the Subject: header.

I am still interested in a confirmation of the, shall we say,
"insensitive" (not that I have a severe problem with that!) statement
by the surviving members of "Squeeze." Most people would have better
sense than to say something like that right after the death becomes
public knowledge. Not me, you understand, but most people.

It was reported in today's Guardian as happening on Sunday.

Howard Jones' fan email reported the death a day or two ago. Evidently Kevin
Wilkinson was playing with Howard when he was in the USA around the 4th of July
holiday and would have been back in the USA for a small tour later this month.

Very sad.

The insensitive statement was a undoubtedly a "joke" by the DJ's that
you heard (or someone having a goof at their expense). I believe this
for two reasons:
1. They've had two drummers play in the band since Kevin left (the
latest joined about a month ago), so they're not looking for one; and
2. The *real* statement by the surviving members of Squeeze, along
with photos of Kevin, can be found at
http://www.squeezefan.com/kevin.htm
(This also gives a list of many of the artists he played with.)

Kevin played in one of the few Squeeze lineups I never saw perform
live (although I do have a video of him playing with them on Late
Night with Conan O'Brien). Still, Kevin did a fine job on the one
album he did with them, and his parting was apparently amicable.
R.I.P.

(and by the way, Squeeze bassist Keith Wilkinson was *not* related)
