I was really just totally devastated to hear about his death. I only
found out today. He was an incredible person. If you are even remotely
interested in being a happier person, read one of his books.

Not to be confused with Nikki Bacharach, who died a month later.

What was the cause of death?

No one said clearly, but journalists implied a heart attack.

Yup. I knew of this guy. His death, ironically came a year ago December
when I was in Vancouver talking to somebody about his book, DON'T SWEAT THE
SMALL STUFF. Carlson died on an airline flight of a heart attack.

Tragic event. I just wish he had taken better care of his heath. Maybe
his diet had too much saturated fat. That's what causes a lot of heart
attacks.

Well, unfortunately, a lot of self-help gurus (and I *loved* his books) tend
not to take their own advice. I have a feeling Mr. Carlson was a
workaholic, ergo under a lot of stress. I could be wrong, but that was my
impression at the time.

According to his website he didn't have a heart attack. He had a
pulmonary embolism.

I just looked PE up on emedicine.com - I had thought it was a
relatively uncommon condition, but in reality it's the third most
common cause of death in the United States. Prolonged immobilization
(as you'd have sitting in an airline seat for hours) is a common cause
of PE.

Rachael Carson was also a great environmentalist as well as a
humanist. Her loss will be devastating to one and all!

Thanks, Charlene. When the news first came down, it was thought to be a
heart attack. I didn't hear anything further and never thought to go to his
website. PE is indeed very common, especially for frequent travellers.

From the shining references I have read that were written about him, I
think he did follow much of his advice. Only trouble is the advice
didn't extend to "take care of your physical health as much as your
mental health". As you noted, stress can be one of these factors. If
it had, I'm thinking he would have lived a very long time.

I suppose, in most all cases where people die relatively young, if they had
done something different they would have lived longer .... or something like
that ... I dunno ... it's too early in the morning for me ...;)
